TWO RACES, TWO TRACKS, TWO WINNERS, ONE DAY FOR SMART BEACH TRIP
Danny Bohn Grabs First SMART Victory With Score in Carteret Clash
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Swansboro, NC (August 31, 2024) - History was made by the SMART Modified Tour. The series completed two races on a single day, within a 14-hour span, at two different race tracks, on Saturday, August 31, 2024.
The nightcap saw Danny Bohn, from Freehold, NJ, grab his first Bankers Life SMARTY trophy in dramatic fashion in the Carteret Clash at Carteret County Speedway in Swansboro, NC.
Race strategy helped provide an opportunity for the third-generation racer at the end of the contest. Bohn, who had taken tires earlier in the race, stayed on the track when many of the top competitors pitted with eight laps to go in the 99-lap race.
From his front row starting spot, Bohn had to survive two more restarts and some strong challenges from Blake Barney, Jonathan Cash, Luke Baldwin and Ryan Newman to win the trophy.
“Finally, huh? Man, I’ve wanted one of these SMARTY trophies so bad. I might sleep with this tonight,” said Bohn, who drives the Ameri-Fast Supply of NC number-24 for Buddy Ellis.
“If I’m being honest, I thought we were done there. You play the game, but when we had that long red flag, it kind of brought back memories of last year when we were leading (and didn’t win the race).
“We’ve worked our butts off to get this one and it’s nice,” continued Bohn, who has 18 career starts with the SMART Modified Tour powered by Pace-O-Matic. “We’ve been knocking on the door. That’s a third, a second, a second and a win (in the last four races), so we’re going to celebrate this one a little. We needed it. Hopefully we’ll get another one at Caraway.”
Jonathan Cash, in the Pace-O-Matic 16va for SS Racing, finished second, his best-career SMART effort.
“When you take tires, you’re tight for a little bit, and it took about to the last lap for me to get the front grip again,” explained Cash, who hails from Oxford, NC. “We were really bad at Caraway, but these guys went to work. Luke (Baldwin) went to work, even drove my car to help me. We all got better and it showed tonight with this SS Racing team and I can’t thank them enough.”
Ryan Newman won the Pace-O-Matic 99 earlier in the day, which was held at 9am at New River All-American Speedway in Jacksonville, NC. After making the 34-mile commute to Carteret, the SHITI Coolers team finished third at Carteret.
Luke Baldwin, a teammate to Cash, was the Bankers Life Halfway Leader and the Jostens Lap Leader of the race by pacing the field for 91 laps. The Pace-O-Matic 7va finished in fourth.
Point leader Carson Loftin, who has five wins this season, rounded out the top-5 finishers.
Bobby Labonte won the Pace-O-Matic Pole Award in qualifying and turned the MJ Printing & Graphics fastest lap of the race on lap four with a time of 16.255. He finished ninth after being involved in an incident with a handful of laps to go.
The SMART Modified Tour powered by Pace-O-Matic will be back in action this Saturday, September 7, at Caraway Speedway in Sophia, NC, for the Robert Jeffreys Memorial. Racing is scheduled to begin at 7pm ET.
All SMART races are streamed live on FloRacing, the official streaming broadcast partner of the SMART Modified Tour powered by Pace-O-Matic.
