SMART MODS AND CRATE MODS DOUBLEHEADER AT SOBO ON OCT. 14
SMART Mods and Carolina Crate Modified Join Forces for Pace-O-Matic 99 Raceday
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Martinsville, VA (September 25, 2023) - The Pace-O-Matic 99 at South Boston Speedway on Saturday, October 14, has now become twice as nice.
The SMART Modified Tour powered by Pace-O-Matic announced a month ago that it would compete at SoBo for its penultimate race of 2023 (click here for more). Now, the SMART Modified Tour is also bringing in the Carolina Crate Modified Series to form a doubleheader at the famous facility in Virginia.
The SMART Modified Tour will work with the Carolina Crate Modified Series for the open-wheel doubleheader at South Boston.
“We are fortunate to be racing at a facility like South Boston Speedway twice this season,” said Chris Williams, Director for the SMART Modified Tour. “Now fans will be able to see two styles of Modified racing in a single day. The crate modified division is a perfect way for newcomers, or those with lesser funded teams, to become part of the action. We believe it is part of the healthy future of southern modified racing. We wanted to work with the Carolina Crate Modified Series at this event to gauge possibilities for the future.”
A schedule for the SMART Modified / Carolina Crate Modified doubleheader will be available soon. Teams wanting the register for the crate modified portion of the show will be able to do so by visiting the series website.
Brian Loftin won the initial SMART race of the season at South Boston Speedway (April 1). The Lexington, NC driver will be looking for a clean sweep of SMART’s visits at SoBo on Saturday, October 14, with the running of the Pace-O-Matic 99.
Also, joining the SMART Mods and Crate Modifieds at South Boston Speedway will be the Southern Ground Pounders. The vintage race cars, with Modifieds and Sportsman cars, will surely treat fans to some more exciting action.
The next event for the SMART Mods will be The Radford Race on Sunday, October 1, at Pulaski County Motorsports Park, which is better known as Motor Mile Speedway, in Fairlawn, VA. The track is adjacent to Radford, VA, but the race is named after one of the most prolific southern modified racers of all time, Paul Radford. Please visit the Motor Mile Speedway website for more information on the event.

The SMART Modified Tour captures the essence of one of the most legendary forms of racing in America, pavement Modifieds. Born in 1988, these ground-pounding, 600-horsepower missiles are a must-see for any racing fan.
In 2020, Chris Williams brought SMART Modifieds back to prominence after a brief hiatus. Due to the overwhelming popularity from its fan base, a four-race schedule in its initial year has given birth to an adventurous 14-race schedule in 2023.
This year will mark the third full-season of SMART Modified Tour racing. Many of Modified racing’s best drivers, from all over the country, will compete with the series, which visits 13 different racetracks in three different states in the Mid-Atlantic - North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.
SMART Modifieds compete on grueling asphalt oval short tracks, embedded in quaint local communities, each spring, summer and fall.
