BALDWIN SCORES FINAL REGULAR SEASON WIN IN FLYING VA CLASSIC AT DOMINION
Five Playoff Contenders Head Into Round One Wednesday at Lonesome Pine MP
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Martinsville, VA (September 14, 2024) - It’s fitting that a family with deep roots in Modified racing would win a race honoring one of the division’s greatest racing families.
Third-generation Modified racer Luke Baldwin scored the victory in The Flying VA Classic, an event honoring the legacy of Ray and Roy Hendrick. The win at Dominion Raceway in Spotsylvania, VA, on Saturday, with the SMART Modified Tour powered by Pace-O-Matic, was Baldwin’s second of 2024.
“It was a really special moment driving alongside that Flying VA 11 car,” explained Baldwin in Pace-O-Matic victory lane, just moments after a victory lap with his SS Racing 7va and the Flying 11 coupe of Ray Hendrick. “I’ve heard a lot of stories and it's really special to park this one on a night that honors their name.”
Baldwin, from Mooresville, NC, had to fend off the challenges of Howell, NJ racer, Jimmy Blewett in the closing circuits of the 99-lap event.
“I had to run with a lot of big names during this one,” said the 18 year-old. “This thing was on a rail. I think I could have taken a little bit better care of it to prevent that run Jimmy had there at the end. I can’t thank everybody enough; these guys bust their tails and they’ve been giving me a winning race car every single race. I was finally able to put one together and man, they deserve this.”
“I wanna congratulate Luke; I’ve known him since he was a little baby. I’ve seen him mature and grown into what he is right now, a great young race car driver ,” said Blewett, who finished runner-up for the third time this year with the series in the Jamie & Cheryl Tomaino number-99. “We’re building a notebook little by little. I know we’ve come up short here a couple of times, but we’ll get one eventually.”
Danny Bohn, from Freehold, NJ, placed third, his fifth-straight Top 5 finish. Rounding out the Top-5 finishers in The Flying VA Classic were Burt Myers, from Walnut Cove, NC, and Sammy Rameau, from Worcester, MA.
The contest at Dominion Raceway was the final event of the SMART Modified Tour regular season. Now, the Top-5 driver in points will square off in a 3-race playoff as detailed by the series. The playoffs begin Wednesday, September 18, at Lonesome Pine Motorsports Park in Coeburn, VA.
Carson Loftin is the regular season champ and the number-1 seed in the playoffs. Dominion winner Luke Baldwin is the second seed and Danny Bohn, who finished third in the Flying VA Classic, is third in the standings heading into Wednesday’s race. Ryan Newman, who had engine difficulties at Dominion, and defending series champ Burt Myers round out the playoff contenders.
If any of the playoff-contending drivers win at Lonesome Pine, that driver will automatically advance to the SMART 3 championship event at North Wilkesboro Speedway on Saturday, October 19.
The playoff driver with the least amount of points exiting LPMP will be eliminated, unless that driver happens to be the winner of either race. If the winner of the event happens to have the lowest point total of the playoff contenders, the next lowest driver in points would be eliminated.

SMART Modified Tour
The SMART Modified Tour captures the essence of one of the most legendary forms of racing in America, pavement Modifieds. Born in 1988, these ground-pounding, 600-horsepower missiles for the SMART Tour are a must-see for any racing fan.
In 2020, Chris Williams brought SMART Modifieds back to prominence after a brief hiatus. Due to the overwhelming popularity from its fan base, a four-race schedule in its initial year has given birth to an adventurous 15-race schedule in 2024.
This year will mark the fourth full-season of SMART Modified Tour racing since its return. Many of Modified racing’s best drivers, from all over the country, will compete with the series, which visits 13 different racetracks in three different states in the Mid-Atlantic - North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.
SMART Modifieds compete on grueling asphalt oval short tracks, embedded in quaint local communities, each spring, summer and fall.
