JOEY COULTER RETURNS TO WHERE HIS LOVE FOR MODIFIEDS BEGAN
Low Country 99 Kicks Off SMART Modified Season Saturday at Florence
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Martinsville, VA (March 1, 2023) - A former NASCAR Truck Series winner is headed back to where his love for Modifieds began.  Joey Coulter will be racing the Low Country 99 on Saturday (March 4) at Florence Motor Speedway (SC) with the SMART Modified Tour powered by Pace-O-Matic.

Before October 17, 2020, Coulter had never sat behind the wheel of a Modified.  But after that day, the first for the SMART Modifieds at the South Carolina racetrack, he was officially a Modified winner.
“The theme of the day was, ‘Wow, I can’t believe I did that.’  As long as I’ve raced I’ve never had a day go that flawlessly,” explained Coulter.  “I couldn’t get to town early enough on Friday so Brandon Ward (current SMART Modified driver) shook the car down for me.  He said it was a pretty good piece, so I got there Saturday and went in blind.

“I got done with qualifying and I ended up with the pole and a track record,” added Coulter.  “The car was great thanks to Randy Renfrow.  We played our tire game right and at the end of the race I was in position to go for the win.  I did enough prep work to figure out how the race was going to be and all the dominoes fell in the right direction.  It was a pretty unbelievable weekend overall.”
Ironically, this will be the first time Coulter returns to Florence Motor Speedway since that fateful day in 2020.

“I wanted to go back to Florence, but it didn’t work out with Harold’s (Holly - crew chief) schedule, or mine with two girls and a business.  But, I’m definitely looking forward to seeing how things have changed at the track with the Modifieds there.  Now that everybody has a notebook with a lot of experience there, I think it’s going to be even more exciting than the last time I was there.”
Coulter’s Rum Runner Racing team is also hoping this is a good start to a full-season of racing with the SMART Modified Tour presented by Pace-O-Matic.

“It is our intention to race the whole SMART Modified season,” stated Coulter.  “As long as we can make it work with our other racing (Dirt Late Model Driver Development), and I can keep myself out of trouble, we are going to try to race every one.  We’ve seen what was going on with the SMART Tour, and all the momentum they have, and that’s why we are Modified racing.

“I’ve had a blast driving Modifieds.  I tell people all the time that this is the first race car I’ve driven that is that fast and not aero dependent.  You get into something that is stuck to the ground because it has 15-inch tires and it doesn’t weigh anything, plus it has a ton of horsepower, and I just love it.”
Coulter’s number-02 machine has a sleek new flat-gray paint scheme for the 2023 SMART Modified Tour presented by Pace-O-Matic.  Coulter’s ride is backed by SRI Performance, Race-Fan, DriveRefine, Simpson Race Products and Molecule Sports.

The Low Country 99 on Saturday (March 4) at Florence Motor Speedway will be streamed live on FloRacing (https://www.floracing.com/watch).

SMART Modified Tour
The SMART Modified Tour captures the essence of one of the most legendary forms of racing in America, pavement Modifieds.  Born in 1988, these ground-pounding, 600-horsepower missiles are a must-see for any racing fan.

In 2020, Chris Williams brought SMART Modifieds back to prominence after a brief hiatus.  Due to the overwhelming popularity from its fan base, a four-race schedule in its initial year has given birth to an adventurous 14-race schedule in 2023.

This year will mark the third full-season of SMART Modified Tour racing.  Many of Modified racing’s best drivers, from all over the country, will compete with the series, which visits 13 different racetracks in three different states in the Mid-Atlantic - North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.
SMART Modifieds compete on grueling asphalt oval short tracks, embedded in quaint local communities, each spring, summer and fall.
